II. Summing up the story: Brown Bear, Brown Bear
●
Put the flashcards of the animals that appear in the story on the board.
- Explain to pupils that animals live in different places.
- Ask pupils: Which animals live on the farm? Which animals live in the
forest? Which animals live in the zoo?
●
Hand out the animal flashcards, one to each group, and put the color
flashcards on the board.
- As you hand out the animal cards, ask pupils about the story: Do you
remember what color the horse was? (blue)
- Ask a pupil in the group to pick up the blue flashcard from the board and
hold it.
- Do the same with all the animals in the story.
Reading
As you read the story, have pupils stand up according to the color and animal
cards they are holding. For example, when you say brown bear, both the
pupil with the brown flashcard and the pupil with the bear flashcard will stand
and hold up their cards. Then you and the class say: I see a _____ ______
and the two pupils standing up complete the sentence: the pupil with the color
flashcard says: brown and the pupil with the bear flashcard says: bear.
●
●
Remember to say at the end: I see (pupils) looking at me. The class stands
up and says: pupils.
ABC
Finding Letters
●
- Hold up a page in the book. Ask individual pupils to approach the book
and point to a letter they know. Pupils say the name of the letter and the
sound. Read the word that they pointed to. (Example: Pupil says: B,/b/ you
say bear.)
- Now open a page and point to a word. Pupils shout out the letter.
●
The Letter U
- Stick the flashcard and wordcard for bus on the board.
- Point to the card and say: bus.
- Have pupils repeat after you: bus.
- Emphasize the short /u/sound: /b/u/s/.
- Ask what other words pupils know with the /u/ sound. Elicit: up, under,
umbrella (new word), bus, jump, fun or funny, pup.
- Point to the letter U and chant: The letter is U, the sound is /u/(up).
- Ask a pupil to find U on the ABC strip.
- Ask pupils what letter comes before U.
