II. The story: There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly
Introduction

Discuss the cover.
- Show pupils the book. Show them the front and back covers and ask: What
do you see? Focus pupils' attention on the old lady, her facial features, and
the animals.
- Point to the picture of the old lady and say: The old lady is swallowing
a fly (gesture the action of swallowing). This is a fly. Point to the fly and
ask: What is this? Pupils answer: It is a fly.
- Ask pupils: Do people really swallow flies?
- Ask them: Is this story real or imaginary?
- As pupils discuss what they see in the picture, ask them for the beginning
letter of the words.

Discuss the title.
- Tell pupils the title of the book: "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed
a Fly."
- Help pupils make the connection between the title and the cover of the
book.
- Ask pupils what they think the story will be about.
- Ask pupils what characters they think will be in the story.
- Have individual pupils point to a word and say the letters in the word. Then
you say the word. Example: pupil spells out t-h-e-r-e. You say: there.
- Ask: Who can find an S? Have a pupil come and point to the letter S.
Repeat with other letters in the title.
First Reading

Read the story and use exaggerated gestures. Do not sing the song yet.
- Stop and point out different animals: fly, spider, bird, cat, dog, cow, horse.
- When you reach the spider, put your hands together to look like a spider
and wiggle your fingers like spider legs.
- As you read, encourage pupils to shout out the name of the animal that is
being swallowed.
- Emphasize vocabulary and actions on each page.
