Discuss what happened in the book. Ask: Which animals did the old lady
swallow? Ask pupils who answer correctly to come and find the pictures in
the book.
- Ask pupils: How many animals did she swallow? Count the animals
together with the class while pointing to them in the book.
- Ask pupils: Why did the old lady swallow a bigger animal each time?
- Ask pupils: What happened at the end?

- Sing the song slowly while pointing to the correct picture in the book and
letting pupils fill in the end of the sentence. For example: There was an old
lady who swallowed a ______ . I don't know why she swallowed
a _______ . Perhaps she'll cry.
- Sing again with exaggerated gestures, sounds and facial expressions so
pupils will enjoy singing.

- Read the words in the word bank.
- Complete the activity while playing the song "There Was an Old Lady Who
Swallowed a Fly" (song #2.18).

- Ask pupils what the spider did. Elicit: wriggled and jiggled inside her.
- Ask pupils how they wriggle and jiggle. Demonstrate and tell the class to
wriggle and jiggle.

The Letter J
- Point to the word jiggled in the book and ask if anyone knows the
beginning letter.

Tell pupils it is the letter J, for jiggled. Chant: The letter is J, the sound is /j/.
- Have pupils repeat after you: J, jiggled. Ask pupils to jiggle their bodies
and say jiggle jiggle jiggle. Tell pupils to be spiders and jiggle.
- Ask pupils what other words they know that begin with the sound /j/. Elicit:
jungle, jump, jeans, jacket, jeep. Repeat the phrase, and have pupils repeat
after you: jump and jiggle.
