The Letter V
- Show pupils the picture/s of vegetables and say: These are vegetables.
- Ask: Do you like vegetables? Which vegetables do you like?
- Tell pupils vegetables are very healthy.
- Stick the picture and wordcard of vegetables on the board.
- Ask a pupil to come to the board and point to and name the letters s/he
recognizes in the word.
- Tell pupils that the beginning letter in the new word vegetables is a new
letter. Ask them what the sound is. Elicit /v/.
- Ask pupils what other words they know that begin with the sound /v/. Elicit:
van, victory, video, villa. Discuss each word. When you say the word
"victory" make the victory sign with your fingers and ask them to do the
same.
- Stick all pictures and wordcards on the board. Point to each word and
picture and say the word.
- Explain the word vet and show pupils the picture and word.
- Sound out the word with pupils: /v/e/t/.
- Ask a pupil to point to the beginning letter of all the words on the board.
- Ask another pupil to find the letter V on the ABC strip.
- Ask pupils what letter comes before and after V.
- Chant: The letter is V, the sound is /v/.

- Draw the house and write the letters Vv in the house.
- As you write the letters, talk about what you are doing.
- Show pupils how the V resembles the U, but the U is round like a smile and
the V has a sharp point.
- Write the letter in the air with your finger.
- Now have pupils write the letter V with a finger, in the air and on their desks.
- Have two pupils form the letter V with their bodies.
