The Letter Q
- Tell pupils: There is only one letter of the ABC that we have not yet
learned.
- Point to the letter Q on the ABC strip.
- Chant: The letter is Q, the sound is /k/.
- Ask: What other two letters do you remember that have the sound
/k/? (c,k)
- Show picture flashcards of a queen, a duck saying quack, quack and of
quiet.
- Point to the queen and say queen. Have pupils repeat queen.
- Point to the quiet flashcard. Put your finger to your lips and say quiet. Have
pupils repeat quiet.
- Point to the duck. Ask: What does the duck say? (quack, quack)
- Emphasize that the letter q is usually followed by the letter u (put the two
letters next to each other on the board) and then the sound is /kw/.
- Point to the pictures again and repeat: queen, quiet, quack, quack. Have
the class repeat after you.
- Now say: I am walking quickly. Walk quickly in an exaggerated way. Say:
quickly, quickly.
- Have pupils repeat after you.
- Hold up the question mark flashcard and ask: Does anyone have a
question? Explain what a question is.

- Draw the house and write the letters Qq in the house
- As you write the letters, talk about what you are doing. Show pupils how
the small q goes down to the basement.
- Now have pupils write the letter Q with a finger, in the air and on their
desks.
