Introducing READY
Course Book pages 2-3
•
Show pupils the Course Book. Remind pupils that books in English open from left to right. Have pupils
practice opening and turning pages in their books correctly.
•
Briefly explain to pupils the structure of the Course Book (use L1 if needed). Have pupils open their
books to the table of contents on pages 2-3.
•
Show pupils that first they will work on Getting Ready, to remind them of what they learned last year.
Then, they will work on five different units: Amazing Houses, Farm to Plate, School Life, What
Happened? and Hopes and Wishes! Tell pupils that in each new unit they will learn new words, read
texts, and learn about how to speak and write English correctly (grammar).
•
Introduce the pupils to their course materials and discuss any labels that pupils can use to easily
locate information in their Course Book, e.g., what pages to work on in the Workbook, when they
must use their notebook, where to find the glossary, etc.
Have pupils write their names on their English notebooks and explain how they will use them.
Writing Tip: Remind pupils that names in English always begin with a capital letter.
•
Introduce pupils to the glossary, beginning on page 217 in the Course Book. Tell pupils that it includes
all the review and new words that they will learn this year.
Ask pupils if they have used a dictionary before and if so, what for. Elicit some uses of a dictionary
from pupils’ experience. Tell pupils that they can use the glossary in the book to help them
remember the words, read texts, and check how to spell words in English.
Ask pupils to observe what letter the words start with in the beginning of the glossary on page 217.
Ask pupils to observe what letter the words start with at the end of the glossary on page 233. Point
out to pupils that the glossary lists words in alphabetic order in English.
Have pupils practice finding a few words they know in the glossary.
Course Book pages 3-4
•
Have pupils look at the pictures on the page and predict some of the topics they will learn about in
this book. Encourage responses in English using vocabulary pupils know (pupils can use L1 if needed).
•
Tell pupils that these kids appear in each unit of the book. Assign or have pupils choose one unit to
explore a bit more. Have pupils flip through the unit to look at the pictures and predict the topics they
will learn about.
•
After a few minutes, ask volunteers to share with the rest of the class what they found. Choose at
least one pupil to share about each unit in the book.
Ask pupils which topics in the book they are most interested in learning about.
