Before reading, have pupils point to each digraph (ch, sh, th, ph) and review the sound(s) each
digraph makes.
•
Have pupils listen and read the words along with the recording. Have pupils point to each word on
the page as they hear it.

The letters S and H make the sound /sh/: English, ship, should, show
The letters T and H make two sounds.

After listening, repeat the words one at a time. For each word, have pupils find the digraph (CH, SH,
TH, or PH) and say if it's in the beginning, middle, or end of the word.
•
Ask pupils to say other words they know that have the sounds /ch/, /sh/, /th/, /TH/, /f/ (ph). As you
elicit words, add them to the lists in task 1 on the board.

Have pupils look at the sentence pyramid and find at least one word for each digraph (ch, sh, th, ph).
•
Use the sentence pyramid to practice reading for fluency. Have pupils read the lines of the sentence
pyramid aloud until they say a full sentence. Have pupils practice pronouncing the words in the
sentence accurately and assess them for fluency skills. Repeat the reading practice twice.
•
Have pupils complete the peer assessment checklist found in the workbook on page 280.
