For additional reading fluency practice: Have the pupils work in pairs. One pupil reads the sentence
tree, and their partner times how quickly they read it. Switch. The goal is to read the words quickly
and smoothly, without hesitation.
Ready to Read – Hard and Soft C and G
•
Show the flashcards and ask: What sound do you hear in the beginning of the words: candy, cook,
camera? (Elicit: /k/)
What letter makes the sound /k/ in the words? (Elicit: the letter C)
What sound does the letter C make in the words: center, cinema, pencil? (Elicit: /s/)
•
Say: The letter C can make 2 sounds: /k/, or /s/ if it is followed by the letters E, I, or Y.
•

Do the activity to review the vocabulary (show the word cards): against, age, camera, climb, collect,

Review the vocabulary using the word cards before doing the activity. Add gestures for as many words or
phrases as you can as you review them.

Sort Me (VA #1)
Begin by putting four sounds on the board that will become the categories: hard c /k/, soft c /s/,
hard g /g/, soft g /j/
Divide the class into two teams. Each team sends a pupil to the board to write one of the vocabulary
words under the category.
Teams receive points for each word placed under the correct category. You may choose to give
bonus points for correct spelling.
Once all (or most) of the words have been used, start two new categories, and continue playing
