word clearly and allow pupils to repeat it several times (loudly, softly, with gestures). New verbs
appear in the Course Book in English in their base form (V1) to allow pupils to recognize the verbs in
their conjugated forms.
b. How to Review Vocabulary
The activities in READY are of a “spiraled curriculum” nature, meaning the vocabulary and language
skills are re-entered to deepen the pupil’s knowledge of the language from part to part and from
unit to unit. Vocabulary is reviewed and re-entered abundantly through different sources and
activities in the Course Book and in the Workbook.
The teacher should take every opportunity to maximize review of vocabulary in the myriad of
material provided. Specific suggestions for doing so are included in the detailed instructions of the
Teacher’s Guide. Within the program, every part of every unit includes opportunities for review.
c. Choral and Individual Repetition
Pupils must be active users of the foreign language in order to learn it. Repetition of vocabulary and
expressions helps pupils internalize the foreign language. Repetition can be choral or individual.
Choral repetition is a motivating way to get pupils to participate actively in the lesson while
reinforcing target vocabulary and language. It builds confidence and allows even timid pupils to
practice using the language without focusing attention on him/herself. Pupils can participate in
choral interactive reading of sentences and texts.
d. Vocabulary Activities for Practice and Reinforcement
Games and activities provide a wonderful opportunity to engage pupils in using the language for real
communication purposes. They are fun, motivating, and maintain the pupils’ interest while
practicing vocabulary and natural discourse.
Teachers are encouraged to routinely utilize the thirty Vocabulary Activity models provided in order
to practice new vocabulary. In addition to reinforcing the new language, the teacher is also provided
with games for reviewing previously taught words. The teacher should organize review activities
with the class periodically throughout the unit to re-enter language and reactivate vocabulary that
have been taught in previous units.
Every unit and part in this program incorporates a detailed description of the Vocabulary Activities.
The models in READY are designed to provide teachers with the flexibility to modify the games to
suit the target language and the needs of the class. Many can also be played in pairs, trios, or in
group competitions, providing opportunities for cooperative learning.
A full list of all the Vocabulary Activity instructions in the program appears in Appendix I in the back
of the Teacher’s Guide.
e. Word Workout
Each language has its own natural order. It is undeniable that having a better understanding of that
order enables pupils to become better readers and writers of English (Hoang, 2021). READY includes
a Word Workout section which allows pupils to gain a more depth of vocabulary knowledge e.g.,
compound nouns, opposites, abbreviations, action words, stative verbs.
