READY Teacher's Guide - Book - Page 115
•
Ask pupils to look at the sentences in the Course Book.
•
Ask pupils: What do you do every day? What time do you do it? What do you do once a week?
Ask pupils to identify the subjects and verbs in the sentences.
Ask pupils to identify the different forms of the verb in the sentences (Elicit: pick/picks).
Tell pupils that they will learn that we add -s to the verb when the subject is "He/She/It" (Use L1 if
needed).
Introduce the present simple (positive). Remind pupils that they were introduced to Present Simple
(positive) in 5th grade.
Explain that the Present Simple is used to talk about:
-
•
Explain that in order to say a sentence with the subjects he, she, it, we add an -s to the verb in the
Present Simple. Use L1 if needed.
Give example sentences for each pronoun in present simple: I pick tomatoes. You pick tomatoes. He
picks tomatoes, etc.
•
habits (I dance twice a week.)
things we do on a regular basis (I eat breakfast every morning.) (use the examples, use L1 if
needed)
Ask pupils to compare how they say these sentences in their own language. How are they the same
or different?
Tell pupils that some verbs have different spelling rules in the Present Simple third person singular
subject (he, she, it):
Explain that if the verb ends in "s, ss, sh, ch, o, x, z" we add -es to the end of the verb, instead of -s.
Give the examples of: He goes home. She washes the vegetables.
Explain that if the verb ends in -y, and is preceded by a consonant, we drop the -y and add -ies. If the
verb ends in "vowel + y" we just add -s. Give the examples of: It flies in the sky. She buys apples.
Grammar Activity
•
Do the activity to practice the form: present simple (positive).
•
Sentence Builder (VA #20)
Before the lesson, prepare the Sentence Builder cards. You will need the following cards: pronouns,
verbs (for example: like, eat) and the verb ending "-s", and noun phrases (things) (for example:
football, candy, ice cream, etc.).
Pass out the cards, one per pupil.
Have pupils stand in a line to create sentences. Say a sentence and have the pupils who hold the
correct cards stand at the front of the class. For example: (He) (like)(s) (ice cream.)
Say a new sentence by changing either the pronoun, verb form, or noun phrase at a time. Play a few
times to have pupils practice building sentences, especially focusing on combining the correct
pronoun and form of the verb in a Present Simple sentence.
