Before teaching the grammar form, ask pupils to look at the sentences in the Course Book.
Ask pupils to look at the first two sentences.

Ask pupils to look at the last two sentences.

Tell pupils that they will learn where to use expressions of time in a sentence (Use L1 if needed).
Explain that we use expressions of time in the Present Simple to help describe the habit or activity
we do on a regular basis. They can describe how often you do something. They can be one word
(adverbs of frequency) or phrases (expression of time).
Explain that some expressions of time (adverbs of frequency) usually come before the verb in a
sentence: always, usually, often, sometimes, never.

Ask pupils to identify which phrase in each sentence describes "how often" (Elicit: every day,
once a week)
Ask pupils to identify where in the sentence these words appear (Elicit: at the beginning or
end of the sentence)
Introduce the expressions of time

Ask pupils to identify the verbs in the sentences (Elicit: make, eats) (Remind pupils that we
add -s to verbs if the subject is he/she/it.)
Ask pupils to identify which word in each sentence describes "how often" (Elicit: always,
sometimes)
Ask pupils to identify where in the sentence these words appear (Elicit: between the subject
and the verb)
Point out to pupils that if you do something 100% of the time, you do it "always": I always make
breakfast. If you do something 0% of the time, you do it "never": He never eats vegetables.
Tell pupils that the word “sometimes” can appear in the beginning, middle, or end of a sentence.
Explain that some longer expressions of time (2 or more words) come at the beginning or end of a
sentence: every (day/week/Friday/morning, etc.), once a year (month, etc.), twice a year (week, etc.).
Give the example sentences: I drink water every day. Once a week, I make a fruit salad.

Course Book page 73, task 6

Have pupils look at the chart at the top of page 72. Have pupils complete the sentences based on the
chart with the correct word from the word box.
Course Book page 73, task 7
•
Have pupils say the sentence out loud 5 times. After pupils have practiced, invite pupils that want to say
it in front of the class 5 times. Optional: Take several volunteers, and time how long it takes each them
to say the sentence 5 times. Whoever says it fastest, wins.
