Before teaching the grammar form, remind pupils of the scenario that they read on page 72. Remind
pupils that the scenario included positive, negative, and question form.
•
Ask pupils to look at the sentences in the Course Book.
•
Ask pupils to identify the subjects and verbs in the sentences.
Point out that each sentence has “do not” or “does not”. Ask pupils what they think this means.
Tell pupils that they will learn that we use do not before the verb (or does not when the subject is
“He/She/It”) to say a sentence that is negative. (Use L1 if needed.)
Tell pupils that they will learn how to say a negative sentence using the to be verb (Use L1 if
needed).
Introduce the Present Simple (negative). Remind pupils that they were introduced to Present Simple
(negative) in 5th grade.
Remind pupils of the uses of the Present Simple (to talk about habits or things we do on a regular
basis). Give the example: I like to shop.
Explain that in order to say a sentence in the negative, we add do not or does not before the verb.
Give the example: I do not like to shop.
Explain that in order to say a negative sentence with the subjects he, she, it, we say does not, and we
do not add an -s to the verb. Use L1 if needed.

Give example sentences for each pronoun in present simple negative: I do not like to shop. You do not
like to shop. He does not like to shop, etc.

Extension: Expose more advanced pupils to the short forms of the negative sentences. Explain that for
the negative form, the short form combines do or does with the negation word not into one word.
Write I do not like to dance on the board, cross out the letter o (in “not”), and replace it with an
apostrophe to write I don’t like to dance. Repeat for each of the short forms using the same example
sentence as above: You don’t like to shop, He doesn’t like to shop, etc.

Before the lesson, prepare the Sentence Builder cards. You will need the following cards: subjects
(pronouns), verbs (for example: like, eat), negation cards (do not, does not) and noun phrases
(things) (for example: football, candy, ice cream, etc.).
