Do the activity to practice the Present Simple.
•
Ten Questions (VA #21)
Think of a person (a famous person or a person in the classroom), but don't tell the pupil the person
you chose.
Have pupils guess what you are thinking of by asking questions using the Present Simple: Does she
work in a restaurant? Does she have brown hair? Does he know how to cook steak? Answer “Yes,
he/she does. / No, he/she does not.” for each question.
Pupils get ten questions to guess the answer before it is revealed, and a new round can begin.
The teacher may choose a volunteer to lead the game or ask pupils to play in small groups/pairs.

Have pupils choose do or does to complete the questions.

Have pupils answer the questions in Present Simple by saying the answer that is correct for them.

Before teaching the grammar form, ask pupils to look at the questions in the Course Book.
•
Ask pupils what these questions have in common. Elicit that they all begin with a question word
(who, what, when, where, why).
Remind pupils that already know the meaning of the words: who, what, when, where, and why.
Ask pupils to identify the question word and its meaning, the subject, and the verb in the questions.
Tell pupils that we ask wh- questions to get information. (Use L1 if needed.)
Introduce Present Simple (wh- questions).
Review Present Simple questions, and how we form yes/no questions using do and does.
Explain that in English, wh- questions also use do or does after the question word, followed by the
subject and verb. (Use L1 if needed.)

Give example questions for each pronoun in the Present Simple: When do you eat lunch? Where does he
eat lunch? Where do they eat lunch? etc.

Explain “who” questions.
Have pupils look at the sentence Who eats lunch at noon?
Explain that in questions that start with who, we do not use do or does.
Give additional examples: Who likes potatoes? Who wants to watch a movie tonight? Who drinks
coffee every morning?
