Before teaching the grammar form, remind pupils that in English we have a few ways to talk about
possession.
•
Remind pupils of the uses of the verb to have (have/has) to say when something belongs to
someone. Give the example: Alex has a bowl.
Remind pupils of the possessive ‘s. Give the example: Alex’s bowl is blue.
Tell pupils that they will learn one more way to say that something belongs to someone. Ask pupils
to look at the sentences in the Course Book.
Ask pupils to determine what they think “His” and “Our” mean in the sentences.
Introduce the Possessive Adjectives.
Explain that another way to talk about something that someone has in English is to use a possessive
adjective before the noun. Give the example: He has a watch. His watch (is new). We use an
umbrella. Our umbrella is large.
Give an example sentences to demonstrate each of the possessive adjectives: My watch is new. His
steak is hot., etc.
Show pupils that there is a different possessive adjective for each subject. Use this as an opportunity
to review the singular and plural pronouns.
