Acrostic Poem (VA #29)
Before doing the activity, ask pupils to say any words they associate with the word “lunchtime.”
Encourage responses in English and write any words or phrases on the board using vocabulary they
know (remind pupils of the recently reviewed words to help them). Pupils may respond in L1 if
needed; help them to translate their responses and add them to the board.
Write the word “LUNCHTIME” in capital letters from top to bottom on the board.
Work together as a class to write an acrostic poem. Write one word or phrase beginning with each
letter in the word “LUNCHTIME” that they associate with the word. Use the brainstorming ideas to
help.
Alternatively, have pupils work in small groups/pairs to write their own acrostic poems in their
notebooks. Pupils may use the brainstorming done by the class, the glossary in the back of the
Course Book, or any other words they associate with the word. Accept any logical additions to the
poems.
One example of the acrostic poem may look like this:
Let’s have lunch
Use a fork
Noon
Chicken and rice
Hungry
Time to eat
I want pizza
Meal
Enjoy your food

Divide the class into small groups. Choose a category that includes some words from the unit (as well
as previously learned words), e.g., people, food, verbs, etc.
Set a timer for 5 minutes and allow each group to make a list of as many words as they can that fits
the category, without looking at their Course Books. Have pupils nominate a scribe to write the
words down. Remind pupils to be as quiet as possible so as not to be overheard by the other groups.
After the time is up, ask groups one at a time to share the words they wrote down. Write all the
words on the board for pupils to see. If any word is written down by more than one group, it will not
receive points (for example, if more than one group writes "steak," for the category food, no group
receives a point). Groups receive one point for each unique word on their list.
If you wish to play again to review more words, change the category and/or shuffle the groups.
