Remind pupils that in Unit 2 they learned the Present Simple.
Ask pupils to remember what the grammar form is used for (Elicit: habits, things we do on a regular
basis).
Ask pupils to remember how to recognize the Present Simple (Elicit: by time expressions like
“always” and “sometimes” and by verbs with the letter ‘s’ when the subject is he/she/it.)

Tell pupils that they will now learn another grammar form: the Present Progressive. Remind pupils that
they were introduced to Present Progressive (positive) in 5th grade.

Before teaching the grammar form, ask pupils to look at the sentences in the Course Book.
•
Ask pupils to identify the subjects and verbs in the sentences.
Ask pupils to identify how the verb has changed from its original form (pack) (Elicit: to be (am/is/are)
+ VERB+ing).
Tell pupils that they will learn that the form to be + VERB+ing is used to talk about something
happening right now (Use L1 if needed).
Introduce the present progressive (positive).
Explain that the Present Progressive is used to talk about things that are happening now (use L1 if
needed).
Explain that in order to say that something is happening now, we use a form of the verb to be +
VERB+ing. Use L1 if needed.
Say that this tense of the verb ‘to be’ does not exist in Hebrew or in Arabic (or in many other
languages). It is important to stress the point and how important it is in English.
Explain the meaning by translating example sentences into L1. Ask pupils to compare how the idea
of “happening now” is expressed in their language.

Give example sentences for each pronoun in present progressive: I am learning English. You are
learning English. He is learning English., etc.

Explain that sometimes we use expressions of time in the Present Progressive to help describe that the
action is happening now. These include: now, today, this week/month/year/weekend, morning, etc.

Do the activity to practice the form: Present Progressive (positive)

Sentence Builder (VA #20)
Before the lesson, prepare the Sentence Builder cards. You will need the following cards: pronouns,
to be verbs, verbs (for example: eat, sleep, play) and the verb ending "-ing."
Pass out the cards, one per pupil.
Have pupils stand in a line to create sentences. Say a sentence and have the pupils who hold the
correct cards stand at the front of the class. For example: (You) (are) (eat)(ing).
Say a new sentence by changing either the pronoun or the verb form at a time. Play a few times to
have pupils practice building sentences, especially focusing on combining the correct pronoun and
form of the verb in a Present Progressive sentence.
