Have pupils find the verbs in Present Progressive in each sentence. Have pupils match the sentences to
the correct picture.
Course Book page 113

Tell pupils that there are spelling rules for Present Progressive.
Explain that if the verb ends in “e”, we take off the “e” before adding -ing to the end of the word.
Give the example: I am writing.
Explain that if the verb ends with CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant), we double the last letter and
add -ing, except for verbs that end in w, x, or y. Give the example: I am shopping.
Explain that for verbs that end with CVC and the last letter is w, x, or y, we add -ing. Give the
example: I am paying.
Elicit other verbs for each category. Write the verb in Present Simple on the board and then ask
pupils how to spell it as Present Progressive, using the rules that they just learned.

Have pupils complete the sentences with the correct form of the verb in Present Progressive.

Have pupils write a caption for each picture using Present Progressive.

Tell pupils to imagine that one of their parents is calling them to ask what they are doing right now.

Have pupils write a short four-line dialogue between them and their parent.

Writing Tip: Remind pupils that sentences should begin with a capital letter and end with a period.
