Have pupils use the flow chart to choose what Jade is doing now. Have pupils copy the sentences into
their notebooks to write a paragraph.

Writing Tip: Remind pupils that sentences should begin with a capital letter and end with a period.

Have pupils complete the peer assessment checklist found in the workbook on page 280.

Extension: Have more advanced pupils choose options in the flow chart that they haven’t already used.
Have them write the sentences in plural. For example, change I am studying for the big English exam
now to We are studying for the big English exam now.

Have pupils complete the tasks. Review the instructions for each task before allowing pupils to work on
their own or with a partner/small group.

Remind pupils that they were introduced to Present Progressive (negative) in 5th grade.
•
Before teaching the grammar form, remind pupils of the scenario that they read on page 112. Remind
pupils that the scenario included positive, negative, and question form.
•
Ask pupils to look at the sentences in the Course Book.
•
Ask pupils to identify the subjects and verbs in the sentences.
Ask pupils to identify how the verb has changed from its original form (travel) (Elicit: to be
(am/is/are) + VERB+ing). Remind pupils that this form is called the Present Progressive.
Point out to that each sentence has “not.” Ask pupils to identify where it is in the sentences. Then,
ask pupils what they think this means.
Introduce the present progressive (negative).
Explain that the Present Progressive negative form is used to talk about things that are not
happening now (use L1 if needed)
Explain that in order to say that something is not happening now, we use a form of the verb to be +
not + VERB + ing. Use L1 if needed.

Give example sentences for each pronoun in present progressive: I am not studying now. You are not
studying now. He is not studying now., etc.
•
Explain that there are short forms for is not and are not. Tell pupils that the short form for is not is isn’t.
The short form for are not is aren’t. Give example sentences: She isn’t reading a book. We aren’t doing
our homework.
