Grammar Activity

Do the activity to practice the form: Present Progressive (negative).
•
Sentence Builder (VA #20)
Before the lesson, prepare the Sentence Builder cards. You will need the following cards: pronouns,
to be verbs, negation card (not), verbs (for example: eat, sleep, play) and the verb ending "-ing."
Pass out the cards, one per pupil.
Have pupils stand in a line to create sentences. Say a sentence and have the pupils who hold the
correct cards stand at the front of the class. For example: (You) (are) (not) (sleep)(ing).
Say a new sentence by changing either the pronoun or the verb form at a time. Play a few times to
have pupils practice building sentences, especially focusing on combining the correct pronoun and
form of the verb in a Present Progressive negative sentence.

Remind pupils to use the Grammar section on the page to help them with the following tasks.
Course Book page 118, task 5
•
Have pupils match the positive sentences in column A with a negative sentence from column B.
Course Book page 118, task 6
•
Have pupils choose the correct form of the verb to complete the sentences according to the pictures.
Course Book page 119, task 7
•
Have pupils complete the sentences in the Present Progressive with the correct negative form of the
verb in parenthesis.
Course Book page 119, task 8
•
Have pupils use the table to write at least 4 sentences in the Present Progressive negative form,
according to the picture.
•
Writing Tip: Remind pupils that sentences should begin with a capital letter and end with a period.

Have pupils write three things that they are not doing right now.
Workbook pages 148-149

Have pupils complete the tasks. Review the instructions for each task before allowing pupils to work on
their own or with a partner/small group.
