Guess What (VA #14)
Choose a word from the reviewed words (for example, "question"). Don't tell the pupil the word you
chose. Give a clue about the word using vocabulary the pupils know, e.g., Something that you ask.
Have pupils identify the correct word. For each incorrect guess, add another clue, e.g., It can be on
an exam. (Elicit: It is a question.)
Play a few rounds to practice different words. The teacher may choose a volunteer to lead.
Vocabulary
New
•
Teach the new vocabulary using the word cards: agree, any, council, decide, decision, excellent, How
about? join, member, mistake, president.
Say the phrase member of the student council. Ask pupils what they think it means. Use L1 to
explain if needed.
Ask pupils: Is there a student council at our school? What does the student council do?
Ask pupils how the new words are connected to student council.
Ask pupils to determine the difference between "decide" and "decision" (Elicit that one is a verb
(action word), and one is a noun (thing).)
Have pupils point to and read each new word in their Course Books on pages 122-123.

Tell pupils that the letters "-sion" at the end of a word make the sound /zhun/ in English as in the word’s

Ask pupils which of these words is a new word they have just learned. Elicit: decision
-
•
Ask: How many parts (syllables) does the word ‘decision’ have? (Elicit: 3)
Say and clap to count the syllables: /de/ /ci/ /sion/ ‘decision’
Have the pupils say and clap the syllables with you.
Ask pupils what other words they know with this pattern.
