Review the vocabulary using the word cards before doing the activity.

Word Cloud (VA #15)
Create and show a word cloud with the review words. Use a word cloud
generator tool like https://www.wordclouds.com/, or use the one provided.
Divide the class into two teams and have the pupils line up in two rows.
Say a word in the word cloud and have the first pupil in each row (one from
each team) come to the board and point to the word as quickly as possible.
The faster team receives a point.
Repeat to practice all the words and so all pupils have a chance to play.
To make the game more challenging, give a clue rather than saying the word. For example: When
people talk to each other. (Pupils must point to “conversation”.)
Vocabulary
New

Teach the new vocabulary using the word cards: begin, finish, dictionary, hold, most, Mr., Mrs., report
card, smart, subject.

Have pupils point to and read each new word in their Course Books on pages 134/135.
Explain that ‘Mr.’ is pronounced ‘mister’ and is usually used with the family name. For example: Mr.
Smith. The word ‘Mrs.’ is pronounced ‘misses’ and is usually used refer to a married woman. Just like
the word ‘Mr.’ it is used before the family name i.e., Mrs. Smith. Use L1 if needed.
Word Workout (abbreviations): Explain to pupils that some words are shortened forms of longer words.
These are called abbreviations. Write examples on the board and practice their meanings: Mr. – Mister,
Mrs. – Misses, USA – United States of America. Elicit from pupils other abbreviations they know in
English.
Ready to Read with Words I Know – Phonics Review
•
Remind pupils that the letters ‘ar’ in a word make the sound /ar/ in English, as in the words smart, hard.
Ask pupils which of these words is a new word they have just learned. Elicit: smart

Ask: How many parts (syllables) does the word ‘smart’ have? (Elicit: 1)
Say and clap to count the syllables: /smart/ ‘smart’
Have the pupils say and clap the syllables with you.
Elicit other words pupils know with these sounds.
