Introduce pupils to Unit 4. Tell pupils that today they will begin the fourth of five units in the book: What
Happened?

Have pupils look at the pictures along with the unit title and predict what they will do in this unit. Elicit
any vocabulary pupils already know, for example: boat, the Moon, space, etc.

Review

Review the vocabulary using the word cards: amazing, art, correct, draw, find, inside, learn, life, live,
most, museum, people, study, understand, visitor, wall, wrong.
Ask pupils what these words have in common. Elicit (in L1 if needed): visiting a museum, etc.
Tell pupils that the words “live” and “life” are related. “Live” is the verb form of the word and “life” is
the noun form.
Ask pupils: What types of museums do they know? (Elicit any logical response.)

Teach the new vocabulary using the word cards: build, cave, fire, gather, history, simple, stone, the
past, the present.

Ask pupils what these words have in common. Determine that they are all words associated with The
Stone Age (use L1 if needed).
Have pupils point to and read each new word in their Course Books on pages 150/151.
For each word, ask pupils if the word is a verb (action word), noun (person, place, or thing), or
adjective.
Word Workout (action verbs): Explain to pupils that some verbs show an action or something we do.
These are called action verbs. Write examples on the board and practice their meanings: build, gather,
hold. Elicit from pupils other action verbs they know in English (e.g., run, pick, talk, cook).

Tell pupils that the letters ‘th’ make two sounds in English, /TH/ as in the words: gather, thick and /th/ as
in the words: bath, toothbrush.
Ask pupils which of these words is a new word they have just learned. Elicit: gather

Ask: How many parts (syllables) does the word ‘gather’ have? (Elicit: 2)
Say and clap to count the syllables: /gath/ /er/ ‘gather’
Have the pupils say and clap the syllables with you.
Elicit other words pupils know with these sounds.

Ask pupils the following questions. Encourage responses in English and emphasize the target vocabulary
