Pass out the cards, one per pupil.
Have pupils stand in a line to create sentences. Say a sentence and have the pupils who hold the
correct cards stand at the front of the class. For example: (You) (play)(ed) (football).
Play a few times to have pupils practice building sentences, especially focusing on the correct form
of the verb in a Past Simple sentence.

Remind pupils to use the Grammar section on the page and the Spelling Rules on page 292 in the
Workbook to help them with the following tasks.

Explain that some verbs in Past Simple do not end with ‘ed.’ These are called Irregular Verbs. The Past
Simple form is different for each irregular verb. (Use examples and L1 if needed.)

Ask pupils to look at the examples in the Course Book. Give example sentences for each pronoun, in Past
Simple using an irregular verb: I drew a picture. You drew a picture. He drew a picture. etc.
•
Tell pupils to open their Course Books to the Irregular Verb Appendix on page 232.
Have pupils practice using the Appendix. Tell pupils a verb (for example: sell, go, etc.), and have
them find the Past Simple form in the Appendix.
