The Minute Challenge (VA #5)
Show words on the board. Give pupils one minute (timed) to memorize as many of the words as they
can (no writing).
After one minute, hide the words and have pupils write down as many as they can remember.
When they are finished, reveal the words one by one and have pupils check their lists. Have pupils
give themselves one point for each word they remembered, and a bonus point for each word spelled
correctly.
The activity can be done individually or as a team/small group competition.
Vocabulary
New
•
Teach the new vocabulary using the word cards: call, castle, excited, gold, hall, interested, invite,
pleasant, royal, thousand.
Ask pupils what other words they think of when they hear the word royal. Elicit (in L1 if needed):
king, queen
Ask pupils: Are there any castles in your country? Are there royal people in your country?
For each word, ask pupils to say if the word is a verb (action word), noun (person, place, or thing).
Have pupils point to and read each new word in their Course Books on pages 156-157.
Ready to Read with Words I Know – New Phonics Pattern

Tell pupils that the letters 'all' make the /all/ sound in English, as in the words: call, hall, ball.
Ask pupils which of these words are new words they have just learned. Elicit: call, hall

Ask: How many parts (syllables) does the word ‘call’ have? (Elicit: 1)
Say and clap to count the syllables: /call/ ‘call’
Have the pupils say and clap the syllables with you.
Repeat with the word ‘hall’.
Elicit other words that the pupils know with this pattern.

Do the activity to review and practice the vocabulary (show the word cards): call, castle, excited, gold,
hall, interested, invite, pleasant, royal, thousand.

Whisper Chain (VA #29)
Divide the class into two teams and line them up.
Whisper a vocabulary word to the first pupil in each line.
Each pupil whispers the word down the line. The last pupil must say the word aloud and use it in a
sentence. After each word, rotate the pupil at the end of the line.
Teams earn points for correct answers. Play a few rounds to practice different words.
