Before teaching the grammar form, remind pupils of the scenario that they read on page 152. Remind
pupils that the scenario included positive, negative, and question form.

Ask pupils to look at the sentences in the Course Book.
•
Ask pupils to identify the subjects and verbs in the sentences.
Point out to that each sentence has “didn’t.” Ask pupils to identify where it is in the sentences. Then,
ask pupils what they think this means.
Introduce the Past Simple (negative).
Explain that the Past Simple negative form is used to talk about things that did not happen (use L1 if
needed).
Explain that in order to say that something did not happen, we use the word did not + VERB (use L1
if needed).
Explain that didn’t is the short form of the words did not.
Tell pupils that Past Simple negative is different than Past Simple positive. In Past Simple positive, we
use the past tense form of the verb. In Past Simple negative, we do not use the past tense form of
the verb. We use did not + the base form of the verb (use L1 if needed).

Give example sentences for each pronoun in present progressive: I did not visit the castle. You did not
visit the castle, He did not visit the castle, etc.
•
Tell pupils that didn’t is the short form of did not. Explain that some words in English can be combined to
one.
Write did not on the board, cross out the letter o, and replace it with an apostrophe to write didn’t.
Repeat for each pronoun using the same example sentence as above: I didn’t visit the castle. You
didn’t visit the castle, etc.
