Do the activity to practice the form: Past Simple (negative)
•
Sentence Builder (VA #20)
Before the lesson, prepare the Sentence Builder cards. You will need the following cards: pronouns,
negation card (did not), verbs (for example: play, like, eat) and noun phrases (for example: football,
candy, ice cream)
Pass out the cards, one per pupil.
Have pupils stand in a line to create sentences. Say a sentence and have the pupils who hold the
correct cards stand at the front of the class. For example: (You) (did not) (eat) (candy).
Play a few times to have pupils practice building sentences, especially focusing on the correct order
of didn’t and the verb in a Past Simple negative sentence.

Remind pupils to use the Grammar section on the page to help them with the following tasks.

Have pupils complete the sentences in Past Simple negative.

Have pupils read the story.

Before teaching the grammar form, remind pupils of the scenario that they read on page 152. Remind
pupils that the scenario included positive, negative, and question form.

Ask pupils to look at the sentences in the Course Book.
•
Ask pupils to identify the subjects and verbs in the questions.
•
Remind pupils that sentences usually begin with a subject. Ask pupils to identify what these sentences
begin with (Elicit: Did). Ask pupils what they think this means.
•
Tell pupils that in Past Simple, we begin a question with Did (use L1 if needed).
•
Introduce the Past Simple (questions).
•
Explain that in order to make a question in the Past Simple, we use “Did” in the beginning of the
sentence. The subject then follows. Use L1 if needed.
Give example sentences for each pronoun in the Past Simple: Did I meet the king?, Did you meet the
king?, Did he meet the king?, etc.
Explain to pupils that the answers (positive or negative) to the questions are often shortened
versions: Yes, I did (meet the king). Yes, you did (meet the king). No, she didn’t (meet the king).
Tell pupils that we can also ask wh- questions in the Past Simple. Remind pupils of the wh- question
words (who, what, when, where, why).
