Review the vocabulary using the word cards before doing the activity.

Context Clues (VA #22)
Have pupils work in small groups/pairs to choose at least 4 words from the list. They should write
one sentence in English using each word in their notebooks.
When pupils are finished, say the words one by one and ask volunteers to read the sentences they
wrote. If no pupil/group chose a particular word, create a sentence together as a class.
Vocabulary

Teach the new vocabulary using the word cards: brave, deep, discover, island, lamp, map, oil, silver,
steal, wonderful.
Ask pupils what these words have in common. Elicit any logical response (use L1 if needed), including
adventures, finding treasure
Have pupils point to and read each new word in their Course Books on pages 162/163.
Ready to Read with Words I Know – New Phonics Pattern

Tell pupils that the letters “-ful” at the end of a word makes the sound /ful/ in English, as in the words:
wonderful, beautiful.
Ask pupils which of these words is a new word they have just learned. Elicit: wonderful

Ask: How many parts (syllables) does the word ‘wonderful’ have? (Elicit: 3)
Say and clap to count the syllables: /won/ /der/ /ful/ ‘wonderful’
Have the pupils say and clap the syllables with you.
Elicit other words pupils know with this sound.
Vocab Activity

Do the activity to review and practice the vocabulary (show the word cards): brave, deep, discover,
island, lamp, map, oil, sea, silver, ship, steal, travel, wonderful.

Together as a class, create a gesture or movement to review each word before playing the game. Use
props in the classroom for some words if desired.

Mime Game (VA #1)
Act out a word and have the pupils guess the word you are miming.
Have the pupil who guessed correctly come to the board to play the next round. Play several rounds
to practice the words.
The activity can be done as a whole class or as a team/small group competition.
