Use the scenario to introduce the new grammar point.
•
Ask pupils to look at the sentences in the Course Book.
•
Say: Mr. Smith is telling the characters about the Age of Discovery.
Read what Mr. Smith says.
Have pupils look at the picture on page 162. Ask pupils to help the characters answer Mr. Smith’s
question.
Ask pupils to identify the subject in each sentence.

Tell pupils that they will learn how to use these words in a sentence (Use L1 if needed).
Introduce the past tense of to be (positive).
Tell pupils that was and were are the past tense forms of the verb to be (am, is, are).
Explain the verb’s meaning by translating the sentences into L1: I am on the island. I was on the
island. I am at school. / I was at school.
Show pupils that the verb to be (past) has two forms – was and were – and that each form pairs with

Sentence Builder (VA #20)
Before the lesson, prepare the Sentence Builder cards. You will need the following cards: pronouns,
to be verbs (was, were), and adjectives (for example: strong, happy, healthy, tall, etc.).
Pass out the cards, one per pupil.
Have pupils stand in line to create sentences. Say a sentence and have the pupils who hold the
correct cards stand at the front of the class. For example: (She) (was) (rich).
Say a new sentence by changing either the pronoun, verb form, or adjective at a time. Play a few
times to have pupils practice building sentences, especially focusing on combing the correct pronoun
