Mr. Smith: At this museum, we love to act. Today, we have someone acting as if he’s from the time
of the Industrial Revolution. His name is Tom. Here he is!
Mr. Smith: Hi Tom. It’s great to see you!
Tom: Thanks Mr. Smith. It’s always fun to visit the future!
Mr. Smith: Can you tell the students about your life in the past during the Industrial Revolution?
Tom: Yes. Before the Industrial Revolution, I was a farmer. It was nice to be outside all day. I enjoyed
working with animals and growing vegetables. During the Industrial Revolution, I left the farm.
Mr. Smith: Why did you leave the farm?
Tom: Big machines with steam engines were invented. These machines started to do most of the
work that I did. There were machines on farms and machines in the factories. I decided to leave the
farm and go to the city to work with the machines in the factory. A lot of people did!
Mr. Smith: What is it like inside a factory?
Tom: It is very busy. The machines have new engines. These engines help factory workers make
things quickly, but it also makes a lot of smoke and loud noises. The air inside the factory is not clean.
Mr. Smith: Wow! That is very different from the farm! Do you have electricity inside the factory?
Tom: We didn’t have it at first. But now we can turn on lights with electricity. It is very exciting. I
don’t have to work in the dark.
Mr. Smith: Do you have trains?
Tom: Yes. Trains and the railways are new and very important. Trains move people and things
quickly. Before the Industrial Revolution, horses used to move things from place to place. This type
of travel was very slow.
Mr. Smith: Do you have telephones?
Tom: I don’t have one. The telephone is new. Only rich people have telephones. They are very
expensive.
Mr. Smith: What about cars?
Tom: Cars are also new. Some people think cars are amazing. But other people don’t like them
because they think they are too loud, too fast, and not safe.
Mr. Smith: Wow! Important things like electricity, telephones, and cars all started during the
Industrial Revolution.
Tom: Imagine life without them!
Mr. Smith: I don’t want to! Thank you, Tom! Come back and visit us again soon.
Tom: It was fun. I’m going back to the factory. Goodbye!
Mr. Smith: Bye!
