Before teaching the grammar form, remind pupils of the scenario that they read on page 164. Remind
pupils that the scenario included positive, negative, and question form.
•
Ask pupils to look at the sentences in the Course Book.
Ask pupils to identify which words in the sentences describe “who.” (Elicit the pronouns) remind
pupils that these words are the subjects of the sentences.
Ask pupils to identify the past tense forms of the to be verb. Review the forms (was, were).
Ask pupils to identify which word in the sentence means “no.” (Elicit: not)
Tell pupils that that they will learn how to say a negative sentence using the to be verb in the past
tense (Use L1 if needed).

Introduce the past tense form for the verb to be (negative). Explain that in order to make a negative
sentence in the past tense, the word not is said after the past tense verb to be (was, were).
•
Give example sentences for each pronoun and form of to be: I was not on the train., You were not on
the train., He was not on the train., etc.
•
Tell pupils that there are short forms for was not and were not. Explain that the short form combines the
past tense verb to be with the negation word not.
Write I was not on the board, cross out the letter o, and replace it with an apostrophe to write I
wasn’t. Write you were not on the board, cross out the letter o, and replace it with an apostrophe to
write you weren’t. Repeat the sentence above using each pronoun and the short form: I wasn’t tired,
you weren’t tired, etc.

Remind pupils to use the Grammar section on the page to help them with the following tasks.

Have pupils match the positive sentences in column A to the negative sentences in column B.

Have pupils complete the sentence in the negative form. Use the example to demonstrate.

Have pupils read and complete the text with wasn’t or weren’t.
Course Book page 171, task 8

Use the text to practice reading for fluency. Have pupils read the text aloud. Have pupils practice
pronouncing the words in the text accurately and assess them for fluency skills.
•
To practice fluency, have the whole class or small groups of pupils read the text aloud together in
unison, allowing struggling readers to follow along without pressure.
•
Have pupils find the rhyming words and write the words in their notebooks.
