Word Web (VA #10)
Draw a word web with the word "useful" in the center.
In their notebooks, have pupils copy the word web and write at least
three vocabulary words around it that relate to the center word. Pupils
useful
can choose any words they associate with the center word. For
example, electricity, engine, railway, etc.
Repeat to create another word web for: invent.
Have pupils work in partners or small groups. When pupils are finished, ask each group to share a
word web with the class.
Alternatively, say the word and then call on three pupils to give three associated words.
Vocabulary
New

Teach the new vocabulary using the word cards: almost, astronaut, earth, go in/go into, immediately,
land, news, scientist, race, round.

Ask pupils what most of these words have in common. Elicit: going to space, going to the Moon
Have pupils point to and read each new word in their Course Books on pages 174-175.
Word Workout (action verbs): Tell pupils that there are different types of verbs. Ask pupils which of the
new vocabulary words are verbs (elicit: go in/go into, land). Tell pupils that this type of verb is called an
action verb. Action verbs describe what someone or something is doing. Give the examples: “go into the
classroom, steal a pencil, land at the airport.” Act out each phrase for the pupils. Elicit from pupils other
phrases using action verbs and invite the pupils to act them out.

Tell pupils that the letters ‘ear’ make the sound /er/, as in: earth, learn.
Ask pupils which of these words is a new word they have just learned. Elicit: earth

Ask: How many parts (syllables) does the word ‘earth’ have? (Elicit: 1)
Say and clap to count the syllables: /earth/ ‘earth’
Have the pupils say and clap the syllables with you.
Ask pupils what other words they know that have silent letters in English.
Class Discussion

Ask pupils the following questions. Encourage responses in English and emphasize the target
vocabulary in the pupils' answers. Reassure pupils that there is not one correct answer.
1. What languages do you speak?
2. What languages do your parents/grandparents speak?
3. What other languages (other than English) do you want to learn? Why?
