Before teaching the grammar form, remind pupils of the scenario that they read on page 164. Remind
pupils that the scenario included positive, negative, and question form.

Ask pupils to look at the sentences in the Course Book.
•
Ask pupils to identify which words in the question describe “who.” (Elicit the pronouns) remind
pupils that these words are the subjects of the sentences.
Tell pupils that they will learn where to put the past tense to be verb in order to form a question
(Use L1 if needed).
Introduce Past: to be (questions).
Review the past tense form of the verb to be, its meaning in English, and its past tense
positive/negative forms (was, were).
Explain that in order to make a question, the past tense to be verb (was, were) is said at the
beginning of the sentence. The subject then follows. Use L1 if needed.
Show how this is different from a positive Past: to be sentence by giving the examples:
You were in space.
Were you in space?

Give examples sentences for each pronoun and past form of to be: Was I in space? Were you in space?
Was she in space? etc.
•
Explain to the pupils that the answers (positive or negative) to the questions are often shortened
versions: Yes, I was (in space). Yes, you were (in space). No, she was not (in space).

Remind pupils to use Grammar section on the page to help them with the following tasks.
Course Book page 176, task 5
•
Read the speech bubble with the pupils.
•
Have pupils match the question in column A to the correct answer in column B, according to the speech
bubble.
Course Book page 177, task 6
•
Read the text with the pupils.
•
Have the pupils use was and were to answer the questions.
Course Book page 177, task 7
•
Have pupils complete the sentences with words with words from the word box.
•
Have the pupils read the dialogue in pairs.
•
Choose volunteers to perform the dialogue for the class.
