Vocab Activity – Pre-Reading

Clue (VA #25)
Have pupils work with a partner or small group to scan the text on pages 180-185 in their Course
Books. Give pupils the clues below and have pupils write down where they found each picture or
word (page number). More than one possibility for some clues is possible.
1. Find a picture of an astronaut.
2. Find a train with smoke coming out.
3. Find a map.
4. Find the word "cave."
5. Find the word "castle."
Pre-Reading
•
Show the story Bright History Magazine. Discuss the text type. Determine that it is a magazine and point
out the features of the text type (name of magazine, date of the issue, name of the articles).
•
Ask pupils if they have seen or read other magazines. Ask what the topics of the magazines were
about. Discuss that magazines are made up of different articles. Tell pupils they will be reading a
magazine about history, made up of several articles.
Before reading, read together with the pupils the cover of the magazine (page 180). Have pupils then
make predictions about the content of each of the articles, based on the titles and the blurbs.

Ask the pupils comprehension questions while reading:
