Vocab Activity
•
Do the activity to review the vocabulary (show the word cards): excellent, guest, remind, already,
excited, the future, extra, wonderful, easy, task, memory.
•
Review the vocabulary using the word cards before doing the activity.
•
Vocabulary Auction (VA #28)
Divide the class into teams. Give each team a set amount of “money” (play cash or points).
Display vocabulary words and let the teams bid on words.
Once a team wins a word, they must define it or use it in a sentence to “keep” it. If they cannot,
other teams have a chance to “steal” the word by defining or using it correctly. The team with the
most words at the end, wins.

Have pupils look at the text and say what type of text they think it is.

Before reading, ask pupils about the text type. Elicit that it is a thank you note. Point out the features of
a thank you note (greeting, Thank you for…, signature, etc.)
Have pupils look at the text and say who wrote the thank you note to whom.

Read the text together with the pupils.

After reading, ask the pupils why the students wrote Mrs. Marks a thank you note. Elicit what the pupils
have learned from reading the text.
Elicit a personal response from the pupils: Do you write thank you notes when someone gives you a
gift? Have you ever written a thank you note?
Class Discussion

Ask pupils the following questions. Encourage responses in English and emphasize the target vocabulary
in the pupils' answers. Reassure pupils that there is not one correct answer.
1. Do you think that next year, you will stay friends with your friends from this class?
2. What are some things you can do to stay in touch with a friend who is in a different school?
3. Do you think you will make new friends?
4. What is some advice you could give someone about how to make new friends at a new school?
