Review the vocabulary using the word cards before doing the activity.

The Category Is… (VA #19)
Divide the class into small groups. Choose a category that includes some words from the unit (as well
as previously learned words), e.g. school, food/cooking, people, verbs, etc.
Set a timer for 5 minutes and allow each group to make a list of as many words as they can that fits
the category, without looking at their Course Books. Have pupils nominate a scribe to write the
words down. Remind pupils to be as quiet as possible so as to not be overheard by the other groups.
After the time is up, ask groups one at a time to share the words they wrote down. Write all the
words on the board for pupils to see. If any word is written by more than one group, it will not
receive points (for example, if more than one group writes “steak,” for the category Food, no group
receives a point). Groups receive one point for each unique word on their list.
If you wish to play again to review more words, change the category and/ or shuffle the groups.

Vocab Activity – Pre-Reading

Clue (VA #25)
Have pupils work with a partner or small group to scan the text on pages 208-213 in their Course
Books. Give pupils the clues below and have pupils write down where they found each picture or
word (page number). More than one possibility for some clues is possible.
1. Find a science exam.
2. Find a ticket.
3. Find a photo of a village.
4. Find the word "chef."
5. Find the word "astronaut."
Pre-Reading
•
Show the story The Time Capsule. Discuss the text type. Determine that it is a play and point out the
features of the text type (several characters, characters’ names before their lines). Ask pupils if they
have read a play or seen a play in a theater, in English or in L1.

Explain that plays are written to be performed, not just read.
Before reading, discuss the title of the play together. Teach the concept “time capsule” (use L1 if
needed). Have pupils make predictions about what the story will be about.
Let's Read

Read the play The Time Capsule together as a class.
•
Ask the pupils comprehension questions while reading:
Page 208: What is the final project the class will do? (Make a time capsule.) What are the students
going to put in the box? (an item and a note.) When will Mrs. Mark open the box? (When the
students finish grade 12.)
Page 209: What does Alex bring to put in the time capsule? (A photo of his village.) What does Alex
