APPENDIX I – Vocabulary Activities & More
1. Mime Game
•
Act out a word or phrase and have the pupils guess the word you are miming.
•
Have the pupil who guessed correctly come to the board to play the next round. Play several
rounds to practice the words.
•
The activity can be done as a whole or as a team/small group competition.
2. Disappearing Card
•
Show all the cards and have pupils say the words.
•
Then, hide one card and have the pupils say the words again, including the one you have hidden.
•
Continue until all the cards are hidden and the pupils say the words in order from memory.
3. BINGO
•
Have pupils draw a 3x3 grid in their notebooks (creating 9 squares) and write any review words
they choose in the squares.
•
Play BINGO by saying a word and have pupils mark if they have that word in their BINGO grid.
Record the words you say on the board.
•
Continue saying words until a pupil gets three in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) and
calls: BINGO! Check the winning words against the list on the board.
4. Word Association
•
Say one of the vocabulary words and have pupils quickly respond with another word that
they associate with it.
•
Accept any logical answer.
•
Play a few rounds to practice different words.
5. The Minute Challenge
•
Show words on the board. Give pupils one minute (timed) to memorize as many of the
words as they can (no writing).
•
After one minute, hide the words and have pupils write down as many as they can
remember.
•
When they are finished, reveal the words one by one and have pupils check their lists. Have
pupils give themselves one point for each word they remembered, and a bonus point for
each word spelled correctly.
•
The activity can be done individually or as a team/small group competition.
6. Pass the Ball
•
Toss a soft ball or object to a pupil and ask a question. Have the pupil respond before passing
the ball to another pupil and asking the question again.
