Let's Review: Phonics
Ready to Read – Vowel teams
•
Show the flashcards for sweet, sheep, knee. Remind pupils that the vowel team 'ee' in English makes the
long sound /E/.
•
Show the flashcards for school, football. Remind pupils that the vowel team ‘oo’ makes two sounds:
long ‘oo’, as in the word: school, and short ‘oo’, as in the word: football.
•
Show the flashcards for boat, goal. Remind pupils that the letters 'oa’ make the long /O/ sound.
Ready to Read – ‘oar’ R-controlled
•
Show the flashcards for board, keyboard. Remind pupils that the letters ’oar’ make the /Or/ sound in
English. Explain in ‘oar’ the ‘oa’ combination represents the long / sound. The ‘r’ in ‘oar’ modifies the
vowel sound, but the ‘oa’ still makes the long /O/ sound.
Vocab Activity
•
Do the activity to review the vocabulary (show the word cards): board, choose, cook, fast food, foot,
football, goal, keyboard, screen, the Moon.
•
Picture This (VA #13)
Choose a word from the reviewed words. Don't tell the pupils the word you chose. Begin drawing
the word on the board. Have the pupils guess which word you are drawing.
Have the pupil who guessed correctly come to the board to play the next round. Play several rounds
to practice the words.
The activity can be done as a whole class or as a team/small group competition.
