Review the vocabulary using the word cards: bus stop, city, field, forest, house, north, park, place, quiet,
restaurant, some, store, street, there is, there are, top.

Ask pupils what these words have in common. Elicit: places

Teach the new vocabulary using the word cards: across, amazing, hill, little, narrow, over, road, side,
village, whole, wide.

Ask pupils what these words have in common. Elicit any logical response, including: town, place that
people live

Have pupils point to and read each new word their Course Books on pages 30/31.
Elicit from the pupils, synonyms for little (small) and road (street).

Remind pupils that the letter G in English can make two sounds. G makes the hard /g/ sound in many
words, such as: glass, grow. G makes the soft /j/ sound if it comes before e, i, or y, as in the words:
village, change.
Ask pupils which of these words is a new word they have just learned. Elicit: village

Ask: How many parts (syllables) does the word ‘village’ have? (Elicit: 2)
Say and clap to count the syllables: /vil/ /lage/ ‘village’
Have the pupils say and clap the syllables with you.
Elicit other words pupils know with this pattern.

Do the activity to review and practice the vocabulary (show the word cards): across, amazing, hill, house,
little, narrow, over, park, restaurant, road, side, store, village, whole, wide.

Guess What (VA #14)
Choose a word from the vocabulary words. Don’t tell the pupil the word you chose. Give a clue
about the word using vocabulary the pupils know.
Have the pupils identify the correct word. For each incorrect guess, add another clue.
Play a few rounds to practice different words. The teacher may choose a volunteer to lead.
