Show pupils that the verb to be, has three forms – am, is, are – and that each form pairs with
different pronouns.
Give example sentences for each pronoun and form of to be: I am in the kitchen. You are in the kitchen.
He is in the kitchen. etc.

Tell pupils that in these examples the to be verb is combined with a preposition. The verb can also be
combined with a noun, as in: She is a doctor, or with an adjective: He is hungry.
•
Extension: Expose more advanced pupils to the short forms of the verb to be. Explain that some words in
English can be combined to one.
Write “I am” on the board, cross out the letter a, and replace it with an apostrophe to write “I'm”.
Repeat for each of the short forms using the same example sentence as above: I'm in the kitchen.
You're in the kitchen, etc.

Do the activity to practice the form: to be (positive).
Sentence Builder (VA #20)
Before the lesson, prepare the Sentence Builder cards. You will need the following cards: pronouns,
to be verbs, and adjectives (choose any adjective pupils know, for example: strong, healthy, happy,
tall, etc.)
Pass out the cards, one per pupil.
Have pupils stand in a line to create sentences. Say a sentence and have the pupils who hold the
correct cards stand at the front of the class. For example: (He) (is) (happy).
Say a new sentence by changing either the pronoun, verb form, or prepositional. Play a few times to
have pupils practice building sentences, especially focusing on combining the correct pronoun and
form of the verb to be.

Remind pupils to use the Grammar section on the page to help them with the following tasks.

Have pupils complete the sentences using am, is, or are.

Read the Let’s Remember! Box to the pupils. Give example sentences for each pronoun: I have a small
house., He has a small house., etc.

Have pupils complete the sentences with have or has and read the story.

•
Have pupils use the table to write at least 4 sentences with the verb to be.
•
Writing Tip: Remind pupils that sentences should begin with a capital letter and end with a period.
