Grammar Activity

Do the activity to practice the form: to be (questions).
•
Sentence Builder (VA #20)
Before the lesson, prepare the Sentence Builder cards. You will need the following cards: pronouns,
to be verbs, prepositions (choose any words pupils know, for example: on, at, in), noun phrases
(choose any words pupils know, for example: the field, the park, the museum, etc.), and a question
mark.
Pass out the cards, one per pupil.
Have pupils stand in a line to create sentences. Say a sentence and have the pupils who hold the
correct cards stand at the front of the class. For example: (He) (is) (at) (the museum). Then change
the sentence into a question and have pupils change their order accordingly: (Is) (he) (at) (the
museum)(?)
Say new sentences and questions by changing either the pronoun, verb form, or prepositional
phrase at a time. Play a few times to have pupils practice building sentences, especially focusing on
creating the correct word order for question forms using the verb to be.

Ten Questions (VA #24)
Think of a word. Tell pupils a category (places, rooms, clothing, etc.), but don't tell the pupil the word
you chose.
Have pupils guess what you are thinking of by asking questions using the correct form of to be: Is it
outside? Is it a room? Is it upstairs? Answer “Yes, it is. / No, it is not.” for each question.
Pupils get ten questions to guess the answer before it is revealed, and a new round can begin.
The teacher may choose a volunteer to lead the game or ask pupils to play in small groups/pairs.

Remind pupils to use Grammar section on the page to help them with the following tasks.

Have pupils look at the picture and choose the correct answer to the questions.
Course Book page 50, task 6

Have pupils answer the questions about their house and write the answers in their notebooks.

Have pupils complete the peer assessment checklist found in the workbook on page 280.
Course Book page 51, task 7

Review the words in the Let’s Remember! box. Remind pupils that these are the ‘wh’ question words.
Elicit from pupils in the class an example of a question with each word: Where is the bathroom? Who is
in the kitchen? etc.

Have pupils complete the sentences. Tell them to use the words in the Let’s Remember! box to fill in the
blanks.
•
Have the pupils read the dialogue in pairs.
